Double Standard

(2010-03-02 20:58:04) 下一个

For the last few months Olivia has been interested in seeing the movie, Valentine's Day, which was released on Valentine's Day of course.   The reason Olivia was so interested was not the large cast of Hollywood stars (many who she's not familiar with) as much as the fact that two of them are singer Taylor Swift and Taylor Lautner of "New Moon" fame (another movie Olivia wants to see).

She's asked numerous times but we've always told her to wait for the reviews to see if it is 'kid appropriate'.  Unfortunately for her, the feedback on the movie was that it contained a lot of sexual references and innuendo.  The final response is that she won't be able to see the movie now because it's not 'kid appropriate.'

Olivia was upset, of course, and remembered that Evan has been allowed to watch Stars Wars and Transformer movies that are violent.  These were bad enough but beyond that she recounted that he even once watched the "Dark Knight" Batman video one time in China, which was rated R.

"How is Evan allowed to watch an R-rated movie when he's six years old and I'm not allowed to watch a PG-13 movie when I'm 10 years old, and MUCH more mature than him?" she asked incredulously.

She has a point.  There is a double standard.  We need to do a better job reducing the violence Evan may watch, but it's still not going to help Olivia in her quest to watch Valentine's Day, at least for another couple of years.
