When Does Mommy Become a Granny?

(2009-12-31 20:20:52) 下一个

This morning, like every morning, Evan came to our room after he woke up and jumped onto our bed and snuggled with me. I was being lazy lying on the bed reading a book.

Evan was being mischievous. He pulled my glasses down to the tip of my nose and started giggling.

“Haha, you look like a granny now, mom.” He said and seemed really enjoying the practical job he played on me.

“Oh, yeah?” I purposely gave him a “granny look” from the top of my glasses, which made him laugh out loud.

“Do you know what really makes mommy a granny?” I played along knowing he probably has never thought about it.

“Uh…when you are very old?” he took a guess.

“Nope,” I shook my head. “You don’t have to be very old to be a granny and you may not be a granny even if you are very old.”

“Hmm…when you have winkles on your face and hands?”

“Nope.”

“When your hair turns gray?”

“Nope.”

“When you need a stick to walk?”

“Nope.”

Looked like he could not step out of the circle of being old

“What then? Give me a hint.” He begged me.

“Okay, it has something to do with you and Olivia when you grow older. Something has to happen to either one of you before mommy can become a granny.” I tried to explain…and had a feeling this was probably not an appropriate topic to discuss with him.

“So when Olivia and I grow very old then you will become granny?” he was still clueless.

Seeing there was no reason to hang up on the technical part of this question and it didn’t look like he would ever hit the right direction, I decided to tell him the answer.

“Well, after you and Olivia grow up and have your own children, that’s when mommy becomes a granny. Do you understand now?”

“So boy can have babies too?” Evan immediately asked.

From his facial expression you could tell that he was confused and worried. He had always thought only girls would have babies and mentioned to me before that he was very glad he was a boy so he would not have to go through the pain of child birth – he learned all these from Olivia who claimed many times that she would not have babies because of the pain.  So you could tell he was scared and worried after hearing me saying he would have children after he grow up.

Oh boy, this became a little more complicated than I expected and touched the “sensitive” topic that I didn’t really know the best way to answer.

“No, the boys do not have babies but their wives do. So after you are married, your wife will have the babies. ” I tried to explain and hoped that he would stop right here.

And he did…at least about having babies.

“So when I have babies, you will come live with us and take care of the babies?” he asked.

Huh? Did he just book me to take care of his children…already?
