英国探险者Henry Worsley (1960--2016): 独自上路，魂断南极

2016年1月25日（星期一）《纽约时报》在“欧洲”专栏报道：英国探险者Henry Worsley (全名为Alastair Edward Henry Worsley, 1960年10月4日--2016年1月24日)试图成为在没有任何协助（unassisted）、没有任何补给(unsupported)的条件下独自完成徒步穿越南极的第1人。这是史无前例的南极独立探险和野外生存(“Antarctic Solo”)。非常悲壮的是--“壮士一去兮不复返!”

经过69天的艰苦跋涉，Henry Worsley走了913英里（相当于1469公里）。由于极度疲劳和失水，他在帐篷里待了两天。也许他还需要并不太多的时间可以走完剩下的30英里（相当于48公里），达到终点。可是，英雄倒下了！2016年1月24日，Henry Worsley 因腹膜炎不幸辞世。

 

《纽约时报》的文章作者在新闻报道中提到英国已故著名的南极探险英雄Robert Falcon Scott （1868年6月6日—1912年3月29日）的名字，但没有细述他的悲壮故事。

 

1912年，英国南极探险英雄Robert Falcon Scott率领的8人探险队【包括博物学家 Edward Adrian Wilson (1872--1912)】在南极不幸全军覆没。后来救援人员发现：Edward Adrian Wilson始终没有舍弃他采集的极具科学意义的地质标本（包括植物化石）！

英国著名古植物学家、英国皇家学会院士Albert Charles Seward (FRS, 1863--1941)对这批采自南极的植物化石进行了研究，1914年发表论文。他鉴定出舌羊齿（Glossopteris），推断地质时代为二叠纪，距今大约2亿7000万年。这是一个非常重大的科学发现，因为舌羊齿是支持Alfred Wegener (1880--1930) 【中文译名: 阿尔弗雷德·魏格纳】1912年提出的大陆漂移理论（The theory of continental drift）的有力证据。
