Eagles win in dramatic fashion
Northeast continues to surprise District 10-AAA frontrunners this season.
The Eagles basketball team (8-11, 5-4) prevented Northwest (12-9, 6-3) from taking sole possession of first place with a dramatic finish Tuesday night.
Jontae Brown calmly broke through the Viking defenses for a layup to give the Eagles a 58-57 victory. Northwest called its final timeout with three seconds remaining, but it was not enough time as the Eagle defense tightened up on its full-court press and forced a shot from beyond the half-court line.
The Eagles had a slow start this season, but have surprised a first-place team in the district for the second time following the Christmas break. Northeast gave Kenwood its first loss of the season after the Knights had won five straight. Northwest had an opportunity to move in front one game ahead of the pack in the district standings.

In their Tuesday night win, the Eagles only had 11 seconds to make something happen as they were down by one point. That’s when Brown made his way down the paint for the game-winning layup.
Northwest had the upper hand until Brown’s basket, drawing seven team fouls from Northeast for single-bonus shots and forcing the Eagles to foul as the Vikings tried to kill the clock.
The Vikings even had a three-point lead within the final two minutes of the game.
But the Eagles had cut the lead to one with 1:15 remaining when they had forced a Northwest turnover. Nick Green grabbed the loose ball and made the basket for the Eagles. Green, along with Jaylon Tharpe, led the Eagles with 14 points. Green scored nine of his points in the fourth quarter.
In the first quarter, the Vikings scored 13 unanswered points to go ahead 17-4. But the Eagles came right back with 11 straight points and even held a one-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
Elijah McCoin nailed three three-pointers in the second quarter, scoring nine of his 15 points to help the Vikings to a four-point halftime lead.
