全球书评家票选英国最伟大的100部小说。

在世界其他国家的读者看来,英国最伟大的小说是哪些?BBC文化频道的供稿人简·恰巴塔里(Jane Ciabattari)收集了82个书评家的投票,这些书评家从澳大利亚到津巴布韦的各个国家都有——但没有一个是来自英国的。

书单里没有非虚构类作品,没有剧本,没有叙事诗或史诗(没有《失乐园》和《贝奥武夫》),没有短篇小说集(没有《亚瑟王之死》(Morte D’Arthur))——只有英国作家的小说(这意味着没有詹姆斯·乔伊斯(James Joyce,爱尔兰作家))

数百年来,英国小说影响着全世界的小说艺术形式。所以,我们认为有必要了解国际的观点。参与投票的书评家在世界各地生活和工作,有的来自美国,有的来自欧洲大陆、澳大利亚、非洲、亚洲、印度和中东地区。

一些受邀参评的书评家长期从事图书评论工作,一些则在报社、杂志社或文学博客担任编辑。他们包括《时代》的列夫·格罗斯曼(Lev Grossman)、《西雅图时报》的玛丽·安·格温(Mary Ann Gwinn)、“Brittle Paper”博客的艾内海·埃多罗(Ainehi Edoro)、《环球邮报》的马克·梅德利(Mark Medley)、《爱尔兰时报》的芬坦·奥图尔(Fintan O’Toole)、《澳大利亚人报》的史蒂芬·罗梅伊(Stephen Romei)和乔迪·威廉姆森(Geordie Williamson)、《华尔街日报》的萨姆·萨克斯(Sam Sacks)以及《科克斯书评》(Kirkus Reviews)的克莱本·史密斯(Claiborne Smith)。

每位参与投票者提交10部英国小说的名单,每部小说得10分。然后通过计算总分得出了最终的百部优秀小说名单。
