这首已流传了一个世纪的歌曲，人们对于它的诞生地依旧颇多争议。有人认为歌中唱的“红河”是指德克萨斯州的红河，所以1936年和1941年拍摄的与歌曲《红河谷》同名的影片，就是以德克萨斯州的红河为外景，并且把《红河谷》作为主题旋律贯串于整部影片。也有人认为“红河”是指纽约州的莫哈河，因为有位开拓者杰姆斯•克瑞根于1896年发表的一首填词歌曲就和这首《红河谷》内容极为相似。还有人认为，红河是指由加拿大西部流入温尼佩格湖的那条河流……

但通常人们总把这首歌视为加拿大民歌。
