作為系列第七部作品（此前有三部曲加三部前傳），《星球大戰：原力覺醒》將故事設定在《星球大戰3：武士復仇》之後的30年。 《原力覺醒》英文名“The Force Awakens”和以往《星球大戰》的片名保持了一致隊形，同時“原力”作為星戰的概念核心也是第一次出現在系列片名中。導演J·J為了讓本片風格更貼近七八十年代的原版《星戰》三部曲，不僅堅持使用35MM膠片拍攝，還大量使用模型和現場特效，甚至重新啟用摩洛哥當地保存幾乎完好的1977年《星球大戰》片場，希望用實拍追求畫面的複古感。
