卓别林的第一部长片（片长六卷），在风格上放弃一些过分夸张的闹剧动作，开始加入笑中有泪的人情味于完整的故事中，拍成一部相当感人的悲喜剧作品。故事描述一名穷苦的伦敦女人把私生子丢弃在有钱人住宅门口的汽车上。然而汽车被窃，婴孩被扔在垃圾箱旁。玻璃匠夏尔洛经过，把婴孩捡了回家抚养。孩子长大到四、五岁时，夏尔洛带他出去干活。孩子先拿石头掷破人家的窗户，夏尔洛就上前换玻璃，爷儿俩其乐无穷。后来，国家的慈善机构要把小孩送进育幼院，夏尔洛感到一阵迷惘。他决定要把孩子夺回，乃翻过屋顶，追赶上飞跑的卡车，终于把小孩再次抱入怀中。夏尔洛不能回到他居住的顶楼，乃带着小孩到夜店投宿。此时，小孩的母亲已经有了钱，悬赏找回她的孩子。有人为钱把小孩从夏尔洛身边偷偷取走送回给母亲。夏尔洛在梦中来到了陋巷天堂，在那里有争吵也有欢笑。夏尔洛一觉醒来，发现母亲与小孩站在他的身边。他终于找到了幸福。五岁的天才童星贾克柯根扮演小孩，有十分可爱动人的表现。他跟卓别林之间流露出来的父子情，深深打动了观众。卓别林也充分掌握了玻璃匠夏尔洛的细致感情层面，在逗笑之余也严肃地塑造了一个卑微却充满爱心的慈父形象。整个故事拍得十分流畅自然，在上映后轰动了英、美、法等国，把卓别林的声誉带上了一个新的高峰。
