“Steal one's thunder”（偷了某人的雷声）最初的意思是“偷了某人的想法”。这个短语的来历跟雷声有关。1704年，约翰.丹尼斯在他的戏剧《Appius and Virginia》中使用了一种新的制造雷声的方法，但是这部剧不成功，没演几次就被剧院取消了。可是他制造雷声的方法却被用在了其它剧中。他发现之后大叫：They will not let my play run, but they steal my thunder.（他们不演我的剧，却偷了我的雷声。）于是，“steal one's thunder”就成了“偷某人想法”的意思。后来，这个短语又引申出了“抢某人风头”的意思，而且比本义“偷某人想法”还要常见。

此外，抢某人风头还可以用“steal one's show”或“steal one's spotlight”来表示.
