Clemency for U.S. death row denied Davis

Der heute 42-jährige Davis war 1991 wegen der Ermordung des weißen Polizisten Mark McPhail zwei Jahre zuvor zum Tode verurteilt worden. Davis beteuert bis heute seine Unschuld. Eine Tatwaffe, DNA-Spuren oder Fingerabdrücke, die auf ihn als Täter hingedeutet hätten, wurden nie gefunden. Der Fall gilt als einer der umstrittensten Justizfälle der USA. Die Hinrichtung ist für Mittwoch (01.00 Uhr Donnerstag MESZ) im Gefängnis der Stadt Jackson im US-Bundesstaat Georgia vorgesehen.


Wie ein ai-Sprecher in Atlanta sagte, lehnte es der Gnadenausschuss von Georgia ab, Davis zu begnadigen. Die Anhörung des Gnadenausschusses in Atlanta, der Hauptstadt Georgias, galt als letzte Chance für Davis. Zahlreiche Persönlichkeiten, darunter der ehemalige US-Präsident Jimmy Carter, Papst Benedikt XVI. und die EU-Außenbeauftragte Catherine Ashton, hatten Gnade für Davis gefordert.
