France (12) - Paris (Church Day)

(2010-04-16 18:14:52) 下一个
I have seen a lot of beautiful churches before, but Basilique du Sacré-Cœur still took my breath away the first time I saw it. It's just beautiful.

1. Basilique du Sacré-Cœur. Too bad, no photo allowed inside, so you have to go see it yourself.

2. Next stop's Arc de Triomphe.

3. From the top of the Arc after 284 stairs. Grande Arche is in the distance.

4. From the top of the Arc.

5. There are 12 major roads coming into the traffic circle at Arc de Triomphe. You need some wings (or guts) to drive here.

From Arc de Triomphe, we went to Sainte Chapelle. Built between 1242 and 1248 to house the relics of the Passion of Christ (including the Crown of Thorns), Sainte Chapelle suffered great loss during the French Revolution. Some relics were destroyed. The remaining relics are now kept in the treasury of Notre Dame de Paris.

6. The Upper Chapel of Sainte Chapelle. A major renovation was going on.

8. Upper Chapel's rose window.

9. Upper Chapel's door.

10. From Sainte Chapelle, we walked to Notre Dame de Paris which is close by.

11. One of the entrances to Notre Dame de Paris.

12. Inside Notre Dame de Paris.

We waited in line for ~20 minutes to climb the 402 stairs to go to the top of Notre Dame's north tower. This was the only time where Paris Museum Pass didn't let us skip the line. It was a tiring climb but worth it.

13. Notre Dame's most famous gargoyle.

14. Another gargoyle.

16. From the side of Notre Dame.

18. From the back of Notre Dame.
