武德九年，唐高祖李渊次子秦王李世民经过玄武门之变，登上大唐王朝的最高统治地位，成为唐朝第二代皇帝，史称太宗。北方草原民族的首领颉利一直窥视中原千里沃野，乘太宗甫立根基未稳之时，亲率二十万铁骑威逼长安，兵临城下，唐朝陷入风雨飘摇之中。在国家民族生死存亡的危急关头，生性强悍善于用兵的李世民处乱不惊，亲率六骑在渭水便桥迫使颉利大军退兵。李世民审时度势，力排众议，做出了倾其府库向豪强的颉利媾和以换取国家生养发展时间的艰难抉择，从而使国家避免了覆亡的危险。胸怀大志、性格坚韧的唐太宗决心尽快带领军臣民众振兴大唐，征服称雄北方多年的颉利部，实现国家一统。

　　在以后的三年多时间里，李世民卧薪尝胆，励精图治，他一方面发展生产，增强国力，另一方面加强军队训练，提高唐军的战斗力，打造出了一支能够与突厥铁骑争锋的骑兵。唐朝对荒漠枭雄的反击战终于打响，按照李世民的精心计划，一支具有超强作战能力的精锐骑兵千里迂回到颉利大军背后发起突袭。饱含报国热情的大唐将士同仇敌忾，赢得了著名的定襄大捷。唐太宗以超凡勇气和军事才能，统帅唐军一举打败北方强大的颉利部，实现了国家的大统一。战争过后，太宗李世民为了让国家迅速走向和平建设的轨道，竭力摒弃仇恨，实行民族团结政策，大胆地将处于灾荒中的数十万颉利部众迁徙到内地，将良田划给他们耕种，让颉利部绝处逢生。这次规模宏大的人口迁移拯救了草原百姓，他们深为唐太宗对各民族爱之如一的博大胸怀所感染，几百年间兵戈相见积淀下来的矛盾得到化解，各族儿女在大唐广阔疆域内和睦相处，共建东方强国，进一步实现了民族大融合。

　　历经多年战火，贞观初期的唐朝民生凋敝，百废待兴，年仅二十九岁的李世民在政治上具有远见卓识，为国家选择了“揠武修文”的和平建设道路，推行了一系列开明的治国方略，坚定不移地把理政的重点放在支持促进农桑上，大胆裁官安民，不拘一格地选拔人才，虚心纳谏，使得唐朝走上了一条快速发展之路，一幅用热血和汗水描绘的盛世鸿图，开始展现在中华这块曾经多灾多难的辽阔大地上。李世民也因为在文治武功上的不凡建树而被史家公认为中国古代最有作为的封建帝王。

　　在初唐这个国家由分裂走向统一，天下由动荡走向安定的特殊历史时期，涌现出了大批不凡人物，他们之间既有为了共同理想抱负和衷共济的奋斗，也有为了不同阶层利益剑拔弩张的较量。本剧对这些人物进行了深入刻画，对他们智慧的展示和人性的挖掘精彩纷呈。特别是出现在本剧中的一组贞观年间著名的政治人物，如正面角色中有“房谋杜断”盛名的房玄龄、杜如晦，颇有谋略的干臣长孙无忌，著名的谏臣魏征，大智者岑文本，良将李靖、李勣等。他们性格鲜明，遭际各异，彼此间关系错综复杂，有的还结有恩怨，但是对太宗李世民则是绝对忠诚，对国家绝对忠诚，唐太宗以过人的领导力，举重若轻地驾驭着这些身负超凡智略的英才，做到了治国与治人的完美结合。

　　《贞观长歌》是唐初战争与和平的雄浑史诗，在此背景下，一代雄主唐太宗的皇室成员之间也随着历史脉络的宕荡起伏，经历着一次次悲欢离合。本剧根据李世民几个儿子争夺储位的真实历史事件，艺术地编织了他废立皇储的曲折故事，通过庶出皇子李恪、李佑等人与长孙一脉的三个嫡出皇子李承乾、李泰、李治间的储位之争，布置了大量悬念，矛盾冲突惊心动魄，扣人心弦。国家重任，民族未来的选择，让李世民经历了深重的情感炼狱，他长期在封建君王的责任和父子之情间徘徊，不断遭受着心理的折磨。不过，理智最终战胜情感，通过长期考察，他选定了聪明仁爱的皇子李治作为自己的接班人，扶助他继承了帝位，使得贞观的政治路线得到延续。李治继位后，唐朝又开始了另一个兴盛的治世“永徽之治”。

　　《贞观长歌》是一部历史正剧，但是它又抒写了以几段爱情故事，或浪漫或壮美或悲情。剧中巧妙地安排了有确切记载的唐太宗与郑姓女子的婚姻风波。在情与法之间，太宗做出了理智的选择，留下了有情人未成眷属的遗憾，却捍卫了礼法的尊严。剧中女主角安康公主与一位商人和一位曾是浪子的功臣子弟间的爱情，则是波澜起伏一咏三叹，令人荡气回肠。这些爱情故事有机地融入了紧张尖锐宫廷斗争之中，让作品平添了几多绚丽色彩。通过现实主义与浪漫主义手法的结合，《贞观长歌》既向观众展示了一幅英雄辈出风云际会的壮丽画卷，又让人们领略到了处在民族大融合时代里和谐开放、浪漫多彩的盛世唐风，使得作品成为了一曲历史的长歌，爱情的长歌！
