A Special Day

To me, today is a special day for Olivia.

When I pulled up the parking lot of the dance center to drop her off for the dance class, it was the first time she said to me:

“Mommy, you and Evan do not have to come in with me. I want to go to the class by myself. Some of the ballerinas do that.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes!”

Then she unbuckled herself, put the backpack (with her dancing gear) on her shoulders, grabbed her jacket and got out of the car. Through my car window, seeing her little ballerina dressed figure crossing the drive way with her backpack kind of bouncing up and down on her back, seeing her opening the door of the dance center and disappearing inside without even looking back once, I was somehow moved. She did it with such confidence that you felt like she had done this hundreds of times. You can tell from her posture that she is proud to be independent, to be able to go the class by herself.

Wow, my little girl is really growing up. Before I know it, she will probably not want her mommy in her life anymore, can I adjust to that when it comes?

Today is also the first time Olivia counted from one to six in Spanish to me and tried to teach me how to do it (unfortunately I already forgot). Even though I was clueless of what she was saying, daddy said she did pretty good job.

Finally, not something special but fun to mention. I told Olivia this morning that I could not be late for work as I would have a very important meeting with the vice president of our company (just a formality to present a divisional change request I was responsible for).

At the dinner table, after I asked her how her day went, Olivia asked me: “Mommy, tell me one good thing about your day today” which never happened before. I have to say that the “good” part actually made it a harder question to answer. With nothing too exciting to say, I said “Well, mommy’s meeting with the vice president of the company went well this morning.” “Oh, good! Did you get your president’s autograph?”

I am sorry, honey, I just had to laugh on this one tooJ.
