I am a resident physicina who is doing Hematology/Oncology rotation. I would think of Laoshan whenever we discuss leukemia cases. I do not know what exact type of leukemia he sufferred, but I am sure he would have had a much better prognosis if he were diagnosed 30 years later. He would be able to wait for JQ for 1 year and 1 month or even longer. As most of us know, the ultimate cure of the disease is marrow transplantation. There are more than 5 million potential donors on the National Marrow Registry in US. However, the percentage of Asian donors are much lower. This means if an Asian needs marrow, there would be less chance to get a matched donor comparing other ethnic groups. I called the Registry on Friday to be a potential donor as I can give someone a gift of life. As we admire the love from Laoshan, we should do something more prductive. You can get more information regarding the transplantation at www.marrow.org.
• leukemia is curable -piggrass- ♀ (282 bytes) (114 reads) 2006-03-19 I asked a doctor in my lab the day when I knew that laosan got that damn disease. She told me sometimes the patient can be totally cured, although most of the time not....sigh. I put my blood sample in the database several years ago in china. I agree that this is a thing we can do.

However most patients need to have bone marrow transplant. If they do not have a sibling that matches with their HLA typing. Then they need to find a match in the Registry. If any one wants to be a donar, he/she will give one tube of blood for HLA typing, those information will be kept in the Registry. If one day there is one patient who needs to have a transplant and is a good match to your HLA typing. You will be called, you still can say no if you are sick or for other reason, but you also can save a life if you say yes. Almost everyone has enough bone marrow for themselves and can also give to save a life.

Thank you Jing Qiu and Emmy for sharing this with all of us. The love between Jing Qiu touched so many of us, reminded us respect love, respect life, live fully. Jing Qiu, you showed a very different perspective of love to your daughter Sarah, she is lucky.

• a not-so-important question. -wxc417- ♀ (479 bytes) (268 reads) 2006-03-19 did JQ's mom regret that her strictness caused her daughter's unhappiness for 9 years (33-24)? i'd guess if JQ's mom had said 'yes' to their relationship at the first place and LS and JQ were together, they would've been able to get married and have kid(s).
then we'll have a Sara who's older than she's, as she said.
