On March 20, 1969, The Beatles’ John Lennon and his girlfriend Yoko Ono got married in Gibraltar.

Forty-four years later to the day, Ono, now Lennon’s widow, tweeted a photo of Lennon’s bloodied glasses, the ones he wore the day he was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. Along with the photo was the following caption:

“Over 1,057,000 people have been killed by guns in the USA since John Lennon was shot and killed on 8 Dec 1980.”

Ono continued on about the subjects of gun control and her husband’s death in the following tweets:

“31,537 people are killed by guns in the USA every year. We are turning this beautiful country into war zone.” (6:35 AM – 20 Mar 13)

“Together, let’s bring back America, the green land of peace.” (6:35 AM – 20 Mar 13)

“The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 33 years our son Sean and I still miss him.” (6:36 AM – 20 Mar 13)

The always fierce debate over gun control in America has recently received an increase in media attention due to tragic instances of gun violence such as last year’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn. It is also worth noting that Ono’s gun control tweets came a day after an assault weapons ban was removed from the U.S. Senate’s gun control legislation.

John Lennon died in 1980 after being shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman in New York City.
