Middle School

In my opinion, Middle School is a very confusing time for many students because of the transitioning phase between childhood and adolescence. Despite the confusion, students can explore what they like by pursuing a variety of activities usually not available at the Elementary School level.

I was looking through my yearbooks the other day and I realized I was INVOLVED in every single activity the school offered. Boy, was I ambitious. But in comparison to High School, it's perfectly okay to be involved in a lot of extracurriculars because in all honesty, students don't have to devote a lot of time. They can get their feet wet without having to commit as much as they would if they were in High School activities.

So what did I participate in?
  • Quiz Bowl/Knowledge Masters
  • Math Team
  • Declam (Speech)
  • Science Club
  • Flute Ensemble
  • Chess Club
  • MITY (Summer Camp at Macalester College)
  • Midwest Talent Search (Taking the ACT/SAT)
  • Volunteering at the local library
  • Summer Teen Reading Programs
  • Brush with Kindness (Volunteering)
  • Tennis
  • Future Cities Competition
There are probably even more activities available now. A couple of things that I didn't even try were the Spelling and Geography Bees because I'm not much of a "Bee" person. But in comparison to these other activities, if someone really excels at geography or spelling, they can make their way into the National Bees ( a great achievement).
