In my opinion, Middle School is a very confusing time for many students because of the transitioning phase between childhood and adolescence. Despite the confusion, students can explore what they like by pursuing a variety of activities usually not available at the Elementary School level.
I was looking through my yearbooks the other day and I realized I was INVOLVED in every single activity the school offered. Boy, was I ambitious. But in comparison to High School, it's perfectly okay to be involved in a lot of extracurriculars because in all honesty, students don't have to devote a lot of time. They can get their feet wet without having to commit as much as they would if they were in High School activities.
So what did I participate in?
- Quiz Bowl/Knowledge Masters
- Math Team
- Declam (Speech)
- Science Club
- Flute Ensemble
- Chess Club
- MITY (Summer Camp at Macalester College)
- Midwest Talent Search (Taking the ACT/SAT)
- Volunteering at the local library
- Summer Teen Reading Programs
- Brush with Kindness (Volunteering)
- Tennis
- Future Cities Competition
There are probably even more activities available now. A couple of things that I didn't even try were the Spelling and Geography Bees because I'm not much of a "Bee" person. But in comparison to these other activities, if someone really excels at geography or spelling, they can make their way into the National Bees ( a great achievement). |
