Google has chosen the nationalwinner of its “Doodle 4 Google” contest.
“Doodle” means “draw.” School-agedchildrenacross the UnitedStatessenttheirdrawings to Google in the contest in 2015. For the contest, studentscreated “doodles” centeredaround the theme “Whatmakesme...me.”
Fifteen-year-oldAkilahJohnson was this year’s winner. Johnson is a student at EasternSeniorHighSchool in Washington, D.C. She titledherdoodle “MyAfrocentricLife.”
She said in a Googleblogpost, “I based this picture off mylifestyle and what has mademeintowhat I amtoday.”
The word “Google” in Johnson’s doodle is drawnlike a hairbraid. She painted the word “power” in black, and drew the image of a woman’s fist that comes from one of herfavoriteartists.
Johnson’s winningdrawingalsoincludedsigns from the BlackLivesMattermovement. Herdrawingtrended on socialmedia.
Johnson’s drawing was the mainimage on the U.S. Googlehomepage on Monday and Tuesday. She will receive a $30,000 collegescholarship. And herhighschool will alsoreceive a $50,000 award from Google.
Johnsontold the WashingtonPostnewspaper, “I’m excitedabout the scholarship, and I’m excitedaboutGoogle’s homepageevenmore.”
